About JDAI
& Healing Steuben

Our Mission

Educating our community to prevent trauma and reduce harm through grassroots actions.

Our Vision

Steuben County Indiana becomes a community that recognizes and responds to trauma with understanding and empathy.

Healing Steuben is an organization sponsored by the Juvenile Detention Alternatives Initiative of Steuben County Indiana and led by representatives of law enforcement, juvenile justice, local school districts, faith communities, and regional health and mental health providers.

Healing Steuben’s mission is to help the community recognize and respond to trauma with understanding and empathy by providing community events, tools and research that help Steuben County residents identify the primary causes of trauma among our children and youth. Healing Steuben also aims to address those causes through grassroots education and advocacy in coordination with local volunteers and partners.

About JDAI

Steuben County Indiana joined the Juvenile Detention Alternatives Initiative with the goal of bringing reform to local policy regarding youth incarceration. Sponsored nationally by the Annie E. Casey Foundation, JDAI convenes juvenile justice practitioners and system stakeholders to build a better, more equitable, youth justice system in Steuben County with the involvement of local law enforcement, probation officers, and community members.

Since its inception, JDAI Steuben County has seen a significant decline in multiple facets of youth detention. In particular, its efforts have reduced county spending on juvenile detention by $100,845.00 over a six year period.

If you’re interested in volunteering, please visit this page for more information or contact JDAI Coordinator Kathy Armstrong via our contact page.
